While the idea of a North American white Christmas conveys a special kind of magic for a lot of us, Australia has its own unique cultural traditions surrounding the holiday. From Christmas Day beach barbecues that swap hot lunches for fresh seafood and Esky-chilled wine to regional sweet treats, we’ve been customising festive customs to suit our warm December weather and laid-back sensibility for a long time.
Case in point: the rum ball. Although invented by Danish bakers and enjoyed the world over, truffle-like rum balls are a nostalgic Christmassy confection for many Australians. (Along with stroganoff, schnitzel and strudels, they were part of Australia’s post-war continental shift.)
Made from chocolate cake or cookie butter and spiked with rum, their grown-up kick offers a jubilant counterpoint to wholesome yuletide celebrations.
Their time-honoured popularity has made them the inspiration for our newest Sugar Coated candle addition, Oh What Fun! (Designed for lovers of gourmand fragrance, the range comprises limited edition sugar-fuelled candles.) What does it smell like? Imagine biting into a melting morsel of creamy chocolate and buttery caramel infused with rich rum and dusted in cocoa – it’s pure delight at first bite. While Jingle Bell Rock plays in the background, you’ll dance the evening away. One thing’s for sure; there’ll be none left for Santa.
