Ahead of International Women’s Day, we sat down with Glasshouse Fragrances Founder and CEO, Nicole Eckels, to chat business, favourite fragrances, and what the day means to her.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
I see it as a moment to stop and to take note of all that women have achieved in the last year, and the years before that. To see how far we have truly come over the decades. We are all moving forward at such a pace, to slow down as see just how much we have achieved as a gender is incredible. And that should be celebrated.
What has been the most empowering moment in your career?
We have had so many amazing successes with Glasshouse Fragrances – from humble beginnings concocting fragrances in the kitchen to becoming the number one fragrance brand in Australia. Most recently international expansion, including into my home country, the United States. It has been so incredibly empowering to build a network of teams collaborating globally and to witness this growth and maturation into an internationally recognised fragrance brand. It’s something I set my sights on 15 years ago and it’s been incredible seeing that vision come to fruition.
Who are the women who have inspired your journey?
From the outset, my mother. Who for as long as I can remember taught me to believe in me, which is a skill that has set me up for life. But everyday I meet and collaborate with so many inspiring women, from incredible perfumers, to creatives, to entrepreneurs. There are so many women who have risen to the top of their fields, often in traditionally male-dominated industries. I am continually inspired by the breadth of talent that women possess.
What advice do you have for other women who may be looking to make headway in business?
Remember to stop and celebrate your wins, and don’t shy away from setbacks. Tough moments are usually the best teachers and there is always a lesson to be learned.
