ROAD TRIP:
new zealand

New Zealand or Aotearoa is a destination not short of ample natural assets. Which is why the Land of the Long White Cloud is prime for perusing via a road trip. While the eye-catching nation is overflowing with opportunities to hop in your car and explore, there are a handful of road-based journeys which stand head and shoulders above the rest, including the one from Queenstown to Oamaru, taking in Wanaka and the Mt Cook Loop. We’d suggest you make this South Island journey across 4 or so days.

DAY ONE - QUEENSTOWN
Say hello to one of New Zealand’s most famous destinations! Snow bunnies from around the world have long flocked to this place which boasts four separate world-class ski fields, and an impressive population of resorts and hotels in which to base yourself. Queenstown’s town itself also promises a good time thanks to being home to a growing number of great eateries, including institutions like The Sherwood and Rātā.

DAY TWO - WANAKA
Hit the bitumen and head north east towards Lake Wanaka. This is a place synonymous with adrenaline junkies for good reason - snowboarding, skiing, bike riding, hiking, skydiving, and more are right under your fingertips! But those after a more leisurely experience can enjoy that too among the stunning scenery, and gathering of foodie destinations, including New Zealand’s oldest pub the Cardrona which resides on the road into town.

DAY THREE - LAKE TEKAPO
Today you carry on north for around three hours until you greet Lake Tekapo. The journey itself promises to take your breath away, winding through a gathering of valleys on to the base of the Southern Alps. A non-negotiable along your way is a pitstop at the crystal clear waters of Lake Pukaki. And if you’re eager to work up a sweat, explore Mt Cook, New Zealand’s tallest mountain. The resident Mt Cook Loop remains popular, a 3 kilometre stretch which takes just under an hour to complete.

DAY FOUR - OAMARU
The east coast is calling! Specifically the seaside town of Timaru. A popular place to spend the summer holidays, the beach here is tempting for a dip during the warmer months. And the bustle of cafes and restaurants that call Timaru home promise to quench any hunger pangs during your time in town. But your end destination is in sight - just an hour away sits Oamaru. Much loved among history buffs, this destination is laden in heritage buildings. But it’s not just architecture which will lead you to its borders - Oemaru is also home to a colony of Little Blue Penguins.
